42 percent of the populations in Hanoi, HCM City, Da Nang, and Can Tho have access to the internet, according to a comprehensive research study o­n Vietnam’s Net Index by Yahoo! Vietnam and TNS o­n April 2.

The daily average of time spent o­n the internet has doubled, from 22 minutes in 2006, to 43 minutes in 2008, while time spent watching TV decreased by 21 percent, the survey reported.  Internet users spend 174,000 VND every month for access to the internet, and tend to use home-based service rather than public access points.  Nearly 90 percent of users reported that they use the internet for reading o­nline news, 82 percent for web browsing, and 73 percent for chatting.   According to the General Director of Yahoo! Vietnam Vu Minh Tri, the research allows communications policy-makers and marketers to use the internet as an effective tool in reaching target clientele.
